Help! How do I get a company to sponsor me

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this sitution. I am not a student (I'm 37) and I will be moving for one year to Scotland to be with my boyfriend while he goes through the process of immigrating to the U.S. I want to work, in fact I need to work, but I am having a really hard time finding out how one gets a temporary job under my circumstances. I see loads of info on the Govt. websites about what do if you're a student, a person who is immigrating etc. etc. but nothing that applies to my situation. I have attempted to call the British Embassy, but can't get anyone to answer the phone. I will keep trying on that, but thought someone out there might be able to give me some advice. Thanks so much!
